The Drowned Sovereign of Vael'thallan

Chapter V: The Black Tide Shift

The Drowned Sovereign of Vael'thallan

The Shattering of the Ward

The obsidian floorboards of Vael’thallan did not merely tremble; they groaned like dying leviathans under the crushing cosmic gravity. Darklyn stood at the center of the subterranean atrium, her breath rattling behind a visor slick with salt-spray and black rain. High above, the eclipsed star pulsed with a malicious violet light, casting long, warped shadows through the cascading black torrents. Cosmora the Astral Devourer hovered over the fathomless trench, an immense, rift-tearing vortex of void-black ethereal armor. The grinding rings of condensed dark matter that encircled the entity spun with a deafening hum, shredding the very air into static cling and saltwater mist.

Darklyn knew the entity’s eyes—if those cold, burning fissures of starlight could be called eyes—were fixed entirely on her. Cosmora’s cunning was a physical weight, a predatory mind that analyzed every shift in the war host’s stance. The previous day, the sanctuary had claimed them all, burying their ambition in the freezing, stinking muck of the ebon tides. Four times they had marched into this drowned tomb; four times the waters had closed over their screams. Now, as the black tide shifted and the vault emerged once more from the abyss, they had only seconds before the pressure crushed them into marrow.

The Descent Through the Black Tide

To understand the desperation of this final hour, one had to look back to the cold descent through the upper ruins. The journey had begun in silence, a grim march down the volcanic glass pillars that served as the ribcage of Vael’thallan. The scent of ancient rust and decomposing sea-flora hung heavy in the air, a reminder of the wealth—and the bodies—accumulated in Cosmora’s hoard. The warriors had committed their fortunes, staking their names and their very survival on this single, desperate plunge.

When they first breached the lower atrium, Cosmora had greeted them not with a roar, but with a whisper of gravity that made their teeth ache. In the opening exchange, Goldspirit had leaped forward, his paws igniting with the feral fury of the Panda, tearing a ragged wound through the entity’s dark matter rings. Beside him, Dynarion and Goldarion struck with coordinated precision, their weapons humming against the void-black armor. But Cosmora merely turned its cold, celestial focus toward Goldspirit, seeking to dismantle the strongest link in their chain before the battle could truly begin.

The Shifting of the Stars

By the middle rounds, the chamber had become a tempest of light and water. Aeroblade’s blade crackled with thunder, delivering a strike so loud it momentarily shattered the entity's concentration, forcing the cosmic vortex to stall its gathering gravity. Seizing the reprieve, Chromalio darted through the pooling water, his fangs dripping with a luminous, sickly green fluid as he sank a toxic bite into the seams of Cosmora's ethereal plate.

Then came the crushing pull. The void-black vortex expanded, a Gravity Well of terrifying proportions that dragged all seven warriors inward toward the grinding rings. The obsidian floorboards beneath them splintered. It was then that Ignix, his armor glowing with the heat of a dying forge, slammed his great hammer into the stone. A brilliant, orange hemisphere of energy—the Forge Barrier—erupted from the point of impact. The barrier did not stop the gravity, but it softened the blow, wrapping the battered warriors in a protective heat that warded off the worst of the crushing pressure. Goldspirit, capitalizing on the temporary shield, slipped through the mist veil, his movements a blur of toxic strikes that left Cosmora’s dark core leaking starlight like blood.

The Price of Triumph

The momentum had shifted, but the cost was devastating. As the battle entered its tenth grueling turn, the sanctuary began to reject its intruders. The black tide was rushing back into the vault, swirling around their knees in cold, violent eddies. Cosmora, its ethereal form flickering with unstable star-core radiation, concentrated its remaining malice on Darklyn. The warrior stood her ground, her shield raised, but the sheer force of the devourer's targeted strike was absolute. With a sound like breaking glass, her golden armor shattered, and she collapsed into the rising waters, her spark extinguished just as the tide began to turn.

But her sacrifice was the anvil upon which victory was forged. Before Cosmora could chamber another strike, the remaining six warriors descended like a falling mountain. Goldarion led the charge, his claws burning with a rising fury that ignited the damp air. Goldspirit followed, his toxic strikes tearing the final seals of the devourer’s armor. Together, their coordinated momentum tore the vortex apart. Cosmora collapsed in a blinding implosion of gravity, leaving nothing behind but the silent, swirling black waters of the trench.

The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the panting of the six survivors and the sloshing of the ebon tide against the volcanic glass pillars. On the altar of Vael'thallan, the immense, glittering hoard of the Astral Devourer lay exposed, freed from the gravity well that had guarded it for centuries. The survivors gathered their fallen companion's arms, knowing her sacrifice had secured a historic triumph.

As they loaded the spoils onto their vessels, the true scale of their reward became clear. A massive wealth of 54804 PIXY was recovered from the depths, alongside countless treasures dragged from the salt-choked dark. Among the ruins of the vault, the warriors recovered a rare and pristine Greater Armor Seal, its blue runes glowing in the dark, and the legendary, water-logged hull of a ancient Fishing Boat, both pulled from the devourer's hoarded remnants to be brought back to the surface world as proof of their hard-won victory.

Only when the tumult over The Submerged Vault of Vael'thallan had fallen silent did the material consequence become clear: the raid treasury released exactly 54804 PIXY, while Goldarion bore Cotton away from the ruins. The reward was no ledger entry, but a tangible mark left by the ordeal.
