The Ember-Choked Plateau

Four Lions Return to the Menhirs of Skydance Against the Elder Wyrm

The Ember-Choked Plateau

The Reduced Vanguard

A single day had elapsed since the mountain plateau claimed its previous toll, yet the mud beneath the monoliths had not cooled. Damp mist coiling off the lichen-draped pillars carried the sulfurous tang of dragonfire as four Lions stepped onto the bruised clay of Skydance. The rank was slimmer now—Stellarmane, Goldarion, Regnion, and Dynarion forming a tight, cautious arc. Above them, Drakonthar the Elder Wyrm flared his expansive bronze wings, thermal vents along his spine exhausting plumes of ignited ash into the gale. Smoldering charcoal eyes tracked their advance, recognizing the iron-willed survivors of yesterday's crucible.

There was no hesitation in the opening breath. Stellarmane surged forward across the slick turf, channeling pure spiritual energy into a devastating Attack of Panda. The manifestation of spectral claw-fire crashed straight into Drakonthar's bronze flank for three hundred forty critical damage, dislodging a cascade of scorched scales. Beneath the cover of that massive opening blow, Goldarion stoked his battle aura with Rising Fury, heightening his offensive edge. Regnion closed the distance with a brutal Blood Harvest strike for one hundred twenty-six damage, while Dynarion drove his spear home for another two hundred sixty. Yet Drakonthar countered instantly, exhaling a swirling plume of Ancient Flame that clung relentlessly to Stellarmane's mail, setting the warrior ablaze.

Round 1

Venom and Kinetic Fury

The heat grew suffocating as the second exchange opened. Stellarmane channeled the soothing light of Regeneration of Maya to stabilize his scorched vitality, restoring eighty-five health points while his companions locked down the line. Goldarion swung his broadsword across the beast's lower leg for a clean strike, and Regnion raised his bulwark into a True Fortress, bolstering his defenses and weaving an absorbing barrier to cushion incoming blows. Dynarion focused on internal reserves, triggering Regeneration of Furry to recharge his magical pool for the heavy maneuvers to come.

By the third round, the assault reached a violent tempo. Stellarmane drew deeply upon his recovered power, while Goldarion landed a thunderous critical blow for one hundred eighty damage that echoed across the megaliths. Regnion hammered the wyrm's foreleg, creating an opening for Dynarion to dart beneath Drakonthar's obsidian-crested jaw. Dynarion drove a alchemically coated blade deep into a neck seam—a critical Toxic Bite for two hundred five damage that left virulent green poison bubbling against the dragon's bronze skin. The venom bit true, trickling dark ichor down the titan's chest.

Drakonthar answered with full, sweeping devastation in the fourth round. With a roar that shook the standing stones, the Elder Wyrm swept a broad swath of flame and kinetic pressure across the entire vanguard. The wave crashed into all four Lions simultaneously, instantly stripping their armor reserves and shattering Regnion's protective barrier in a shower of sparks. Even as the kinetic wave forced him back, Dynarion thrust his weapon forward in a critical Blinding Spear attack for one hundred fifty-seven damage. Yet the damage was done: gouts of clingy Ancient Flame clung to Goldarion, Regnion, and Dynarion, wrapping every warrior on the field in a ticking thermal burn.

The Crucible of Attrition

The fight degenerated into a desperate race against creeping flames and relentless claws. Green poison continued to leach through Drakonthar's veins, but the dragon turned his full, cruel focus upon the vanguard's front rank. Goldarion carved out a critical strike for one hundred twenty-five damage, and Dynarion matched it with a critical slash for one hundred thirty-two, but the fire in their blood burned ceaselessly. Regnion desperately wove a quick prayer of Maya to restore twelve vital health points, yet his strength was rapidly ebbing under the stacked thermal ticks.

In the sixth round, Drakonthar struck with predatory precision. Swinging his heavy tail across the wet clay, the wyrm caught Regnion off-balance. The critical impact crushed the defender's breastplate and reduced his remaining fifty-one vitality to zero, driving him down onto the mud and eliminating him from the immediate fray. Dynarion barely had time to cast Regeneration of Maya upon himself for sixty-four health points before Drakonthar shifted his smoldering charcoal gaze to the remaining two active combatants.

The Last Standing Flame

Goldarion refused to yield. In the seventh round, he unleashed his own massive Regeneration of Maya, channeling two hundred eight health points of vibrant healing light to purge his immediate wounds. Dynarion pressed the dragon's flank with a critical strike for one hundred twenty-two damage, and followed it in the eighth round with another critical hit for one hundred thirty-seven. Together, the two remaining Lions matched strike for strike against the mountain titan, but the persistent burn of Ancient Flame was consuming their foundations.

Drakonthar zeroed in on the wounded Dynarion in the ninth round. A swift, heavy rake of dragon claws breached Dynarion's final defenses, dropping him to the bruised clay and leaving Goldarion entirely alone upon the gale-swept plateau. Undeterred by the isolation, Goldarion raised his blade and drove it into the wyrm's hide for a critical one hundred thirty-one damage, fighting with the fierce pride of a lone champion.

In the eleventh round, Drakonthar swept the plateau with a final wave of wing and flame. Goldarion absorbed the full force of the gale, landing a weary sixty-two damage strike before his knees gave way beneath the heat. By the twelfth exchange, no physical weapons were swung. The stacked, unrelenting fire of Ancient Flame ticked through Goldarion's last reserves, consuming forty-six and forty-five vitality in rapid succession. Goldarion fell beside the ancient menhirs, his sword slipping into the damp, dark clay.

Combat scene from The Ember-Choked Plateau

Silence descended once more upon The Storm-Torn Menhirs of Skydance. The fast-moving storm clouds continued their race across the twilight sky, casting long, frantic shadows over the silent standing stones and the four fallen Lions. Drakonthar the Elder Wyrm remained standing atop the mountain plateau, his massive bronze wings folded against his back while thermal vents along his spine slowly cooled to a dull amber glow.

The renewed attempt had ended in total defeat. Though the four warriors had carved deep wounds into the wyrm's hide and filled his scales with virulent poison, the relentless heat of Ancient Flame proved an unyielding wall. The expedition ended with the mountain domain undisturbed, waiting for the next brave soul to challenge its smoldering heights.
